ALMOST THERE – Keith Thaxter nears the finish of the Haeckel Hill run with Tom Ullyett in the background (top). AT THE TOP – John Parry arrives at the top of the Haeckel Hill run/walk Saturday. Parry was first to the top, followed closely by his father, Bill.
John Parry and his dad Bill dominated the men’s category in Saturday’s gruelling Yukon Energy Haeckel Hill Run, while Janet Clarke finished first among the women.
The younger 21-year-old Parry completed the 7.2 kilometre climb in 37 minutes and 55 seconds, 43 seconds ahead his 54-year-old mentor.
It is said the Haeckel Hill Run is as challenging, if not more so, than the revered second leg of the Klondike Road Relay and Dawson City’s Dome Run.
Keith Thaxter finished third in the men’s running category with a time of 41:55, a hair ahead of Tom Ullyett who clocked in at 42:11. Doug Mayr was fifth in 45:36, followed by Francis Whiteman in 50:08; Ben Yu Schott, 56:02; Renzo Ordonez, 59:10; and Grant Macdonald, 1:00:18.
Clarke led the field of nine women with a time of 50:50, one minute and 32 seconds ahead of second-place Angie Salo. Margaret Mundell finished third with a time of 56:02 and Suzanne Duncan finished fourth in 57:18.
Robin Fairburn recorded a time of 58:46 for fifth place, followed by Adrienne Marsh in 1:00:48; Jeanne Burke, 1:01:58; Danielle Sheldon, 1:03:52; and Sue MacDunn in 1:12:40.
In the walking category, Bonnie Love knocked off the 7.2 kilometres in 1:02:53, edging Tanya Astika by 40 seconds.
Ginny Macdonald finished third with a time of 1:04:30 and Susan Dennehy recorded a time of 1:18:46.
Mike Ivens, the lone male walker, finished in 1:06:52.
